Specific Injuries Experience
Sarah has considerable experience in the field of traumatic neurological injury and is currently a Case Manager with a specialist Spinal Cord Injury Case Management firm. Her clinical underpinning is in Neurosciences and ITU, so she has a brilliant understanding of initial and ongoing neurological needs; this includes both physical and cognitive impairment and challenging behaviours.
Sarah is very competent in working with clients who have dual diagnosis of brain and spinal cord injury. She also has substantial experience with Cauda Equina Syndrome.
Sarah regularly supports clients with associated respiratory, pressure care and mental health conditions. She also often works with individuals who have suffered orthopaedic injuries in conjunction with brain and spinal cord injuries.
Sarah’s experience in assessments, identifying needs and report writing enables her to write loss of service reports. She is sensitive to people’s needs and empathetic in her approach to loss.
Employment Profile
Sarah works as a Case Manager with Spinal Injury Case Management Ltd, where she has a caseload of clients with catastrophic spinal cord injury, Cauda Equina Syndrome and brain injury. She also providers mentorship to new Case Managers and audits reports. As a neuro-specialist Nurse and Case Manager, Sarah is experienced in co-ordinating complex packages of agency and directly employed care. She has experience with Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), CHC, social care and privately funded medico-legal packages of care and has a sound understanding of when care needs can be met with a support worker and when nursing care is required to ensure the client’s needs are fully met.
Sarah is a member of the RCN, CMSUK, MASCIP, BABICM, and an associate member of the SIA, and she enjoys attending the respective annual conferences.
Sarah has been a Registered General Nurse since 1996. She gained a Diploma of Nursing Studies with her RGN and went on to complete a Degree in Nursing Studies in 2000. Sarah has over a decade of experience working within Neurosciences; including acute Neurorehabilitation, ongoing Neurorehabilitation, and Neurology. The majority of her clinical experience is in acute Neurosurgery and Neuro High Dependency units (HDU) as a staff nurse and then a ward sister. Sarah attained qualifications in clinical teaching, and in Neurosurgical and Neuro-medical Nursing, and gained valuable experience in budget management. She has extensive experience in caring for people with spinal cord damage, brain injury and multiple trauma; from admission through to rehabilitation and discharge planning.
Prior to Case Management Sarah worked as an Approved Disability Analyst Nurse on behalf of the DWP where she completed face to face and paper-based assessments for various benefits including Employment Support Allowance (ESA), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Incapacity Benefit (IB). For each client an independent functional assessment of the impact of their physical, mental health and/or learning disability on their day to day life was carried out. A clear and concise report, based on the legislation in place at the time, was then produced for the DWP. Whilst working as an Approved Disability Analyst, Sarah was seconded to work within the DWP reconsideration and appeals team and the medical authoring team, where she wrote several modules of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) training. During this time, as well as delivering training to colleagues, Sarah attained a qualification in Disability Assessment.
Sarah’s clinical experience and specialist knowledge gives her a compassionate and empathic approach to writing Loss of Services reports detailing the past services provided by the deceased to their dependants and those they would have provided in the future.
Sarah has given evidence as a Witness of Fact in her capacity as a Case Manager and attended Bond Solon’s Courtroom Skills Familiarisation.
