Specific Injuries Experience
Kim has specific experience in community services, but also carries significant confidence in the rehabilitation of those with neurological injuries, including mild traumatic brain injury. She is competent in the planning of care, equipment and housing needs for this client group.
The focus of her current community experience extends to trauma and orthopaedics, fracture injuries (in a variety of age groups), joint replacements and neurological conditions. She has worked with predominantly lower limb amputations, although when working with upper limb amputations they are mostly related to the hand and wrist.
Kim has worked with a number of Cauda Equina and Brachial Plexus injury cases in her community and inpatient roles.
Employment Profile
Kim is a highly experienced Occupational Therapist who currently works within a wrap-around community service encompassing all stages of an individual’s injury journey. This is an integrated NHS and Social Care service. Kim spends most of her time co-ordinating a ‘Bridge Start’ Team which is wholly responsible for resourcing and implementing the ongoing and long-term care support needs of those suffering significant injury or disability within their home and community. Kim conducts all initial needs assessments which includes thorough cognitive assessment. Kim also reviews care packages so is well placed to understand the changing picture of an injury and the likely issues with care long-term. Her work across all services means she can comment and advise on an individual’s current and future needs with confidence.
Kim also has significant neurological experience having worked at Rookwood Hospital and in community posts both in the UK and in Australia. She has most recently worked in a private hospital setting – which used to be a secure mental health hospital – on a neurological unit. Patients that could not be managed in a standard NHS unit or initially in the community were inpatients here. Many were complex, institutionalised patients and essentially not safe anywhere else – complex patients with Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease. As the most senior OT in this hospital, Kim would set up care pathways into community services or other inpatient settings. She managed budgets in conjunction with the local CCGs/health boards and supported community access, with focus on complex equipment not available on the NHS. Kim gained significant supervisory experience and also has hands-on experience of establishing new services, including the hand therapy service and clinic which she founded in Australia.
